Wheel Steering?

 It may be a lubber's folly,  or a sailor's idle musing in  the midst of a stormy season,  but I've been pondering on wheel steering aboard Jacky.  

Aye mate, wheel steering. It's never something I've ever wanted aboard a yacht because of the reliance on windvane steering.  But being a dinghy Jacky had no need for self steering.  The skipper needs to be on the helm at all times while underway. So what about the potential of rigging a small wheel up by the cuddy cabin that affords the crew some shelter? Yes,  it's not conventional, but it could be quite practical. 

The only drawback would be closing off for'ard access. It's bears thinking about.  Running two lines through blocks on the gunnels adjacent the tiller,  then forward.  Blocks leading to a drum attached to the rear of a small wheel.  Could even have a proper seat for the helmsman. Arrh!

 Today Jack will meet his first gale, with lashings of  rain and possibly hailstones. Quite the ordeal for an old fellow,  but his timbers are sealed from the elements & he had two layers of wet weather gear all tied down.  I'll be watching over him as well & spending my best.   In just 2 hours that strong cold front passing over the state, will arrive.  Snow will fall to 800m elevation, there will be rain & hail elsewhere. So they say. There are no school holidays or public holidays in the offing,  so one can assume they're being only moderately overly cautious. A Beautiful Pea Green Boat

Happily bumbling along through life supporting two teenage dependents on a threadbare income, buying a boat was the furthest thing on my mind.  But as I wistfully scrolled through the boats for sale column I was struck dumb by the sight of a beautiful pea- green boat. Clinker hulled with golden varnished topsides and small in size, she could be my ideal next boat.  But,  clearly I could not afford her.  I clicked the love heart symbol to enter my symbolises wishlist,  and tried to forget about her.   She sat on a rusty trailer in my favorite riverside village. I could just go and have a look,  my reckless water baby voice beckoned.  My serious,  struggling farther of two with onerous financial responsibilities scolded loudly: "No way you soft headed twit.  There is no way you can afford another boat.  Grow up! Trailer Winch, Gun'l Varnishing

  Gratuitous alpaca photo.  This is my oldest and only surviving 'paca named Kerry . It's an Australian joke.   So today,  after chopping wood,  and riding my bike I fitted a new (recycled from my Mirror dinghy trailer), hand winch.  Yesterday I removed an electric contraption that George made and probably only he knew how to use. I think it needed a charged truck battery to operate,  so way too complex for me.  I then sanded and garnished the gun'ls and transom.  Looking good.
